Push for marriage equality finally reaches Australian parliament

Ireland’s message to the world — saying “yes” to marriage equality — has created a ripple effect on Australian shores.

Since Ireland became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote, the world has taken notice. Australians and politicians have been campaigning harder than ever to change the marriage act in Australia to say “two people” instead of “man and woman.”

About 1 in 20 people in the general population has experienced at least one hallucination in their lifetime that wasn’t connected to drugs, alcohol or dreaming, according to a new study.

Researchers analyzed information from more than 31,000 people in 18 countries who were interviewed as part of a mental health survey from the World Health Organization. Participants were asked whether they had ever heard voices or seen things that didn’t exist, or if they had experienced a delusion (a false belief), such as the thought that their mind was being controlled or that they were being followed.

The study excluded people who possibly had a psychotic disorder, such as …

No deal in Senate means key Patriot Act surveillance provisions will expire at midnight

The National Security Agency will lose its authority at midnight to collect Americans’ phone records in bulk, after an extraordinary Sunday Senate session failed to produce an 11th-hour deal to extend the fiercely contested program.

Intelligence officials warned that the outcome amounts to a win for terrorists. But civil liberties groups applauded the demise, at least temporarily, of the once-secret post-Sept. 11 program made public by NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which critics say is an unconstitutional intrusion into Americans’ privacy.

Everything you need to know about building a successful corporate careers page

Let’s face it, even great companies fail to host a “careers” page on their website — or host a poorly designed, ineffective one at best

With more and more job seekers flocking to websites and social media to research companies, it’s important to have a strong online presence — and that means a streamlined, well designed careers page.

Here are some tips for making the most out of your corporate careers page.

1. Don’t hide your opportunities

You’re hiring, and you need talent. Many companies hide their opportunities under the “About Us” or “Contact Us” sections of their websites, but not all job seekers know to look thereThe more work a job seeker has to do just to find opportunities at your company, the less likely they are to engage with you.
