Royals comeback: Kansas City beats New York 5-3 in Game 4 of World Series

Alex Rios’ apparent math mistake didn’t add up to a World Series loss for Kansas City.

The Royals right fielder settled under Curtis Granderson’s third-inning fly ball to short right field, seemingly ready for the throw home to keep New York’s Wilmer Flores from scoring.

Then Rios took a casual step toward the dugout, as if he had thought there were three outs, not two.

In the middle of his second step, Rios threw to the plate, but not in time to get Flores, who came across the plate standing up. Rios’ apparent gaffe gave the Mets a two-run lead, but Kansas City rallied for three runs in the eighth inning for a 5-3 victory Saturday night and a 3-1 World Series lead. …

WASHINGTON — A search team using sophisticated sonar has found the wreckage of a vessel believed to be the cargo ship El Faro, which went missing with 33 crewmembers aboard Oct. 1 during Hurricane Joaquin, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said late Saturday.

The federal agency issued a statement that searchers aboard a U.S. Navy ship believed they located wreckage of the ship at 1:36 p.m. ET Saturday at a depth of about 15,000 feet in waters in the vicinity of the ship’s last known position

Should you hire your professional twin?

It’s tempting to hire others who think the same way you do. When you have a lot in common, it’s easy to work together, and a day at the office can feel a lot like hanging out with friends. Unfortunately, making a habit of hiring your professional twins can also quickly lead to disaster, as we learned from General Motors’ close brush with bankruptcy in 2008 to 2009.

As you may remember, the government propped up GM with a $50 billion bailout…

With ‘Ash vs Evil Dead,’ Bruce Campbell resumes his groovy destiny quest

Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams has the final word in the first episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead, and it’s the one that summarizes the whole 40-minute experience: “Groovy.”

Decades ago, Campbell and his chin battled deadites in two different versions of Evil Dead, and an over-the-top trilogy-ender Army of Darkness. From there, Campbell and Ash parted ways — the actor going on to other B-movie heights, the character more or less remaining on ice (aside from a few comic book appearances here and there).

But the chanting from fans for Evil Dead 4 never ended, like curses hissed from the pages of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. (How there isn’t an actual San Diego Necronomic-Con event yet is beyond this writer’s understanding.) And while the lesson of the Ash vs. Evil Dead premiere boils down to something along the lines of “some books should stay closed,” the same lesson does not apply on a meta level. It turns out that the fans were right: Ash is needed — and good things come to those who wait. …

Doctor Who Episode 7 review: Let Zygons be Zygons

Doctor Who Season 9 Episode 7: “The Zygon Invasion”

Grade: C+

Once upon a time in 2013, there was a successful and popular movie-length 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who. So successful and popular, in fact, that “The Day of the Doctor” now regularly tops fan polls, widely acknowledged as one of the best, if not the best, Doctor Who of all time

In the show’s finest tradition, it had a deep and mythologically resonant main plot about the Doctor weighing the decision to end a terrible universal conflict by destroying both sides, including his homeworld. Also in the show’s finest tradition, it had a wonderfully silly subplot about a race of rubber monsters, in this case the Zygons, attempting an invasion of Earth …

New Instagram video viewer takes a swipe at Snapchat and Twitter Moments

Instagram debuted a new feature in its Explore section on Halloween — one that seems to channel the best of Twitter Moments and Snapchat to create a rolling video stream.

The feature, which can be found by swiping through the Explore Carousel invites the user to “Watch Halloween.” After clicking the play button, a curated video roll appears. The videos feature filmmaker Zach King — who’s popular on social media — pranking a trick-or-treater, model Heidi Klum getting ready for Halloween and Astronaut Scott Kelly acting creepy aboard the International Space Station

Stream Con draws in droves of digital conference newbies on Halloween

NEW YORK — Halloween at Stream Con was quieter than expected, with shorter lines and fairly tame crowds.

Thousands of fans, creators and industry members flocked to Javits Center on Saturday for the second day of the inaugural digital content conference. Many who showed up — parents and teens alike — were tri-state locals who said they were first timers to digital content conferences like Stream Con.

But a regional attendee presence is kind of what organizers Leftfield Media and Tubefilter expected. The companies created the event after noticing the lack of conferences geared toward digital content fans on the East Coast. It was also an opportunity to attract Madison Avenue brands, publishers, licensors and advertisers rather than Hollywood honchos, who tend to attend the Anaheim-based VidCon. …
